Unity is the second oldest lowrider car club in the UK, having been formed in 1995. One of its founding members was Ray Ramsey of Rayvern Hydraulics, who first imported lowrider kits from the US and started using them to customise UK cars. Ramsey remains the Daddy Cool of the lowrider culture. Jon, a fellow Unity member, is helping to spread the word.
And the sound. And the moves. Because lowriding isn't just about how the car looks.
Like hippie culture's synonymity with VW Beetles, the lowrider car is a mobile shrine to a lifestyle that originated in the Chicano communities of America. Chicano lowriders took production cars and customised them to make the bodies sit close to the ground. Pride in relationships and craftsmanship, and a need to forge an identity in an otherwise uncaring and impoverished environment, meant the evolution of customisation and incredible paint jobs with imagery reflecting social and historical values.
Chicanos eschewed the fast and furious aspect of 1950s cars and bikes and chose to drive slow. However, the low-slung cars and the snail's pace at which they were driven provoked police suspicion and resulted in height restrictions.
Lowriders took to fitting hydraulic suspension systems to raise and lower the car at a flick of the switch to accommodate the regulations. With hydraulic pumps at each corner, the cars can literally dance. But while lowrider culture has spanned 50 years in America, it has only taken root here in the past decade. Unbelievably, last year's Lowlife event at Brighton was the first ever to feature UK-customised cars such as Jon's. It was a confident nod to the fact that the culture is spreading fast. Just as we would find it strange for American bands to sing about British suburbia, Americans remains somewhat sniffy of UK lowrider culture, but Jon explains that they are starting to take an interest. One of Unity's members sold a customised Ford Granada to an American who drove it to Italy and shipped it back to the US.
'I've had Americans interested in my car, too, especially since I fitted the PlayStation 2,' said Jon. 'It's the ultimate ICE in-car entertainment system because it plays CDs, PlayStation games and DVDs. This is really important as lowriders aren't built for speed. They're lifestyle vehicles built for having fun in.
Fast cars with huge engines can't do anything in a traffic jam, whereas a lowrider comes into its own. Lowrider cars are known for being over the top and to fit a PlayStation 2 is the most you can have.'
Other lowrider clubs are the Zulus from Wales, the Lordz from the Midlands and the Diplomats, which originated in Streatham and filtered down to Portsmouth. Kevin Reilander belongs to the Diplomats, a tight-knit posse that started as a graffiti gang in 1991, embracing lowrider culture in late 1993. At last year's PS2-Lowlife event, his 1985 Pontiac Grand Prix was the star of the show. Painted orange pearl beneath a metalflake spike design, the bodywork is covered in eight gallons of lacquer applied in 22 coats. Inside, the orange, deep-button padding and coffin pleats are reflected in a central strip of mirrored mosaic tiles from the facia to the rear of the car. The wheels, bumpers, light surrounds, chain steering wheel and skull-shaped gear knob are all gold plated.
'I feel everyone else's appreciation for what I've done,' said Kev as the crowds surrounded the car. 'I love it because it's a loud, in-yer-face, ultimate pose. Look at the attention the car gets.' Kev's tattoo, which reads 'From cruising a dream to cruising the streets', is testament to the fact that the car is a labour of love. Like many men who need something to focus on after a divorce, Kev concentrated his efforts in the garage. 'I spent three solid months getting the car ready. I've done nothing else since October.
It's my turn for some attention now.' A sign on his car, which is named Sweet & Sour, reads: 'This car took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to complete. Please do not touch.' 'That's no exaggeration,' said Kev. 'While cutting the chassis with a plasma cutter, molten metal fell on my face.

I burnt my eyes, my shirt caught fire and I had a bit of metal stuck in my eye. I've been nearly unconscious from the paint fumes, because I didn't know that my mask was broken. And I didn't really care. That's what lowriding is all about. The labour of love and the love of attention.' .
